oh sugar, how i love thee.
if you haven’t heard yet, I’m about to give you a fun fact.
sugar is as addictive for the brain as drugs are.
the instant release of dopamine (the happy chemical) and the raise in energy levels sugar gives us when we ingest it is something that would have ANYONE coming back for more — especially our brains.
it’s not wrong to want to feel good, but sugar can only make you feel good for so long until you need more…kinda like an addiction…you see now?
here’s your body on sugar:
🍭release of dopamine in the brain, instant feel good sensation
🍩spike in blood sugar for instant energy, but hard crash later
🍪increase of inflammation in the skin, leading to acne or rosacea
🧁continued overeating of sugar may lea to hardening of arteries
🍫consistent insulin production of the pancreas can lead to insulin resistance (when the body doesn’t even recognize / use insulin anymore)
🍬altered microbiome due to bad bacteria being fed refined sugars
OK that all sounds really scary when you’re like Ann…I just wanted an ice cream cone in a spur of the moment thing.
I’ll never be the one to tell you to stop eating sugar ENTIRELY (have u met my sweet tooth?)
I’m just saying to monitor how often and WHY you’re eating sugar.
Is it for the taste? Are you emotional? Do you need extra energy? Is your cycle about to start? Have you not eaten all day? Are you stressed?
Ask yourself that and start to pinpoint your cravings to see if it’s an actual craving, or if chocolate and coffee is starting to just be a habit at 3 PM.
….(guilty).
