Common Reasons For Bloating

bloating stinks. some bloating is normal, but there’s some signs that should be further looked into.

Look, after a meal, it’s WAY normal to bloat a little. You just put food in your stomach. You’re digesting — and that’s not going to take 5 minutes to pass through. In actuality, digestion takes at least 3-4 hours.

If bloating is super painful and causing other symptoms, I urge you to advocate for yourself with your doctor.

Otherwise, these are some common causes and some simple ways to begin a solution to them:

  • STRESS
I know this one all too well. When I’m stressed I also bloat to feel 9 months pregnant (hot, I know). When it gets to this point, my only priority is resting my mind AND body.

Sometimes even working out too much can cause bloat due to putting intentional stress on your body.

  • EATING TIMES / BEHAVIOR
If you eat or drink way too fast, you’re also inadvertently swallowing more air too (which cues hella gas). Eating too fast also doesn’t usually give your mind a chance to register if yes, you’re full now or if you’re in a competition to clear your plate instead. 🍽

  • POOR GUT BACTERIA
I’m beginning to be a nerd for gut health since enrolling in a gut health course (I’ll be your certified ally here soon). Adding in good pre AND probiotics is key — think: greek yogurts, kombucha, probiotic capsules, pickles, sourdough bread, kimchi, sauerkraut, etc.

  • FOOD ADDITIVES
I used to slam down protein bars like it was my job — but then I realized how bloated I was getting post eating them, so I fact checked the ingredients. Additives like artificial sweeteners and xantham gums to give food flavor / thick consistency can cause aggravation to the gut AND feed bad bacteria to grow too.

…and sometimes, you’re just bloated because you need to poop. ☺️ Eat some prunes, increase your fiber, drink some water, and let it go, sista.

But also remember bloating vs. a happy food belly are two different things — so don’t be ashamed of the latter.
